About McDonald’s in India
McDonald’s is the world’s largest fast food retailer with more than 31,000 restaurants in over 120 countries. In India, McDonald’s started its first store in New Delhi in the year 1996. McDonald’s India Private Limited (MIPL), a subsidiary of McDonald’s however came into being in 1993. In the years before its launch, MIPL developed its unique supply chain and McDonald’s menu. Its revolutionary food handling methods has immensely benefited farmers and their customers alike.
McDonald’s started in India by getting into 2 joint ventures; the first with Vikram Bakshi whose company Connaught Plaza Restaurant Private Limited (CPRPL) was chosen to run restaurants in North & East India. The second was with Amit Jatia whose company Hardcastle Restaurants Private Limited (HRPL) is the master franchise for the restaurants in West & South of India.
McDonald’s association with CPRPL has been rocky and wrought with controversies in the last 6 years. In August 2017 MIPL terminated its contract with CPRPL for North and East India citing reason as the default in payment of royalty by CPRPL and decided to close 169 restaurants franchised through CPRPL. Their venture with HRPL remains strong and as of 2016 HRPL operated 252 outlets in their region.
Hopefully, as things start to settle down a bit more, we’ll see the McDonald’s menu in India continue to serve up their delicious burgers and innovate with new items, just like this Spice Fest:
